I attended The Everyday Math McGraw Conference on July
27th-July 28th in downtown Chicago at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. I was joined by Danielle Smith (Elementary
Program Consultant), Amy McElroy (4th Grade North Hill), and Jaclyn Facca (3rd
Grade Brooklands). The conference lasted from 8:00a.m - 4:00p.m. each day. We
learned about the new Everyday Math 4th Edition that we will be implementing
this school year. I attended the 5th
Grade session each day to learn about the changes the 5th grade teachers will be
making in the new 4th edition. We
learned about the new digital system, the new units of study, and the new
assessment format. I am happy to help
answer any questions anyone has about the new edition and if I cannot answer
it, I will direct you to the person who can! ~Julie Sandrock, 5th grade
I attended a day of Professional Development
yesterday at the Kent ISD in Grand Rapids. Tim Hargis did a full day teaching
on Writing Diner 2. It was fantastic. I am very excited about how to use his
tools this year for teaching writing. ~Sarah MacBeth, 3rd Grade
Over half of our teachers participated in a focused book study with colleagues across our district! Teachers completed blogging and professional reflection regarding Ron Ritchart's, Making Thinking Visible. The collaboration and planning that occurred is impressive and the momentum for our Culture of Thinking work is growing! Thank you to all of the teachers participating from Long Meadow! You Are Awesome...true story!

October Celebrations
Teachers and students are in full swing of sharing and growing their thinking! As our staff completed a "ghost" walk to look for evidence of learning and support of our vision to help children grow into the intellectual life around them, we were amazed and thrilled to see the true validation of student voice! Please review the slideshow below and join our culture of learning by engaging in digging deeper and asking your student, "what makes you think that?".
November/December Celebrations
Spreading Kindness
We have exciting news to share! Kindness Elves visited the first grade classrooms at Long Meadow. Each day the Kindness Elves left messages of inspiration to brighten others’ day. First graders have spread kindness at home, at school, and in the community. Students wrote special notes to a family member and cleaned up without being asked at home. Within the school, the children have presented hot cocoa to the recess para-pros and delivered sharpened pencils to other classrooms. They threw a surprise party for the office staff, sat with new friends at lunch, and decorated signs for the specials teachers, cafeteria workers, and custodial staff. We also spread joy throughout the community by writing letters to the local fire department, making cards for children in the hospital, donating animal supplies to the Humane Society, and collecting spare change to make someone’s "Bad Day Good". The children have learned the true meaning of kindness. This has been a rewarding experience for the Long Meadow first graders.
PTA REFLECTIONS
January/February Celebrations
The New Year kicks off fresh learning with extended exploration and application of Visual Thinking Routines. The common language around our routines is being celebrated in our Music, Gym, and Art classrooms as well! Teachers have shared their professional growth around their GOALS for writing this year and work collaboratively to adjust instruction for upcoming units of study! Our Caring Hare initiatives are going strong with students celebrating respectful and responsible behavior! Keep up the great work, Caring Hares!
Awesome April!
April has brought spring smiles and celebration of our Authors in April! We also shared family time with our Walk or Bike to school day! Taking care of our Earth and our bodies makes for a lot of smiling students and families at Long Meadow! Our staff and students are grateful for our new book room for use within our classrooms! There is nothing as wonderful as opening a new book with a student! Thank you, PTA! Students are leaping, tumbling, and flipping for their gymnastics unit in PE and our Drama Club sells out all of their shows for Snow White. Celebrating the many talents of our kids this spring and enjoying every minute!
